MERRICK STATE PARK, WI

Description

Merrick State Park is located on the beautiful backwaters of the Mississippi River. All Island Campground sites and some sites in the south campground have river access for mooring watercraft or fishing directly from the sites. There are 2.5 miles of manicured trails which are easily traveled with very few hills. Two boat landings provide easy launching for all sizes of boats. Canoes can be rented at the office. Shore fishing is very accessible for visitors without watercraft. A pet picnic area offers visitors a place to enjoy the parks with their pets. Pets must be on a leash at all times while in this picnic area and must be picked up after.

Please buy firewood nearby or at the property you are going to. Call the DNR toll-free Firewood Hotline 1-877-303-WOOD (9663) for information before packing up for a trip. The Headquarters is located .2 of a mile off the main park road and marked by directional signs. From Memorial Day through Labor Day it is open Monday through Friday. The Contact Station is only open Friday nights, Saturday and Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Labor Day through Memorial Day self-registration is available when the Headquarters is closed.

Reservations must check in before setting up camp. All vehicles in the park must have a vehicle admission sticker. Stickers can be purchased upon arrival at the park. Click here for cost of the sticker.Vehicles in the Campgrounds must park on the gravel pads or in designed parking areas. Pets must be kept on a leash not more than 8' long under control at all times. They cannot be left alone at the campsites.

The North Campground is located near railroad tracks. Trains travel 24 hours a day along these tracks.

Reservations for North Campground: 5/18/2009 - 10/5/2009. First come/first serve: 4/1/2009 - 5/17/2009 and 10/6/2009 - 11/30/2009. Closed to camping December - March.

Reservations for South Campground and Group camp: 6/1/2009 - 10/5/2009. First come/first serve 10/5/2009 - 11/30/2009. Closed to camping December - May.

Island Campground - Non-reservable, first come/first serve. The island is connected to the main park area by bridges and is accessible by motor vehicles.

The South Campground, Group Camp and Island Campgrounds may be open for first come/first serve camping earlier than June 1 depending on weather conditions. Reservations cannot be cancelled online.

From Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago areas: follow I-90 west to Exit 4 (Hwy 35). Follow Hwy 35 north through Fountain City. The park is 2 miles north of Fountain City on the left side of the road.

From the Twin Cities: take Hwy 61 south to Wabasha, MN. Cross the Mississippi River on Hwy 25. Take Hwy 35 south through Cochrane, WI. The park is 6 miles south of Cochrane on the right side of the road.
